Bottoms Applauds Social Circle Leaders for Fighting Efforts to Construct One of the Largest ICE Detention Facilities in the Country
Bottoms: This Planned Facility is ‘Yet Another Example of Their Overreach and Complete Disregard for Georgians’
ATLANTA — Democratic candidate for Governor Keisha Lance Bottoms today applauded elected leaders in Social Circle for taking steps to block Donald Trump’s effort to open a new ICE detention facility in Georgia — one of the largest planned facilities in the country.
In a statement released this week, the city of Social Circle shared that it had placed a lock on the water meter connected to the warehouse ICE plans to convert into a detention center until the department answers their questions about the facility’s impact on water and sewer resources for the community.
“What Donald Trump and ICE are attempting in Social Circle is yet another example of their overreach and complete disregard for Georgians. This is not a facility we want in our state.
Social Circle’s leaders have shown real grit in standing up for their community by blocking access to water meters, in order to get answers to their legitimate questions about the impact on water and sewer infrastructure. Georgia localities shouldn’t be forced to foot the bill for Donald Trump’s chaotic and inhumane ICE policy.
"As mayor, I stood up to the first Trump Administration by closing our city jail to ICE when they couldn’t give me assurances that the City of Atlanta wouldn’t be complicit in their ICE family separation policy. I will not be afraid to stand up to the Trump Administration again. As governor, I will continue to stand with Georgia communities to prevent these ICE facilities from being forced on them.”
