Bottoms: ‘Trump is Playing Political Games with People’s Livelihoods, and Georgia Families are Paying the Price’

ATLANTA — Democratic candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms called out the Trump Administration today, following a new report that the Administration canceled more than $300 million in funding to support farmers.

The funding under the Increasing Land, Capital, and Market Access Program had been previously awarded to several projects aimed at supporting Georgia farmers and helping them grow their operations. The projects include an incubator effort for small farmers, veterans and women in Southwest Georgia and the Gullah Geechee Corridor, and a Land Access and Farm Academy program in the Southeast United States including Georgia. Georgia’s number one industry is agribusiness, with a more than $74 billion economic impact in the state.

This cancellation of funds comes as fertilizer prices are soaring because of Donald Trump's war in the Middle East. This is forcing some Georgia farmers to cut their planting season short.

“For farmers already living on thin margins, canceling funds that had already been awarded is not politics as usual — it can mean the difference between holding onto a farm and being forced off the land,” said Bottoms. “Trump is playing political games with people’s livelihoods, and Georgia families are paying the price.

“This latest announcement continues the pattern of the Trump Administration’s disastrous policies that are already raising prices and costing Georgians their jobs. Everywhere I travel across this state, I hear from Georgians who are worried about how Trump’s next chaotic action will harm their families and their communities. Georgia's farmers have already been suffering because Trump's war in the Middle East has caused fertilizer prices to soar.

“What makes it worse is that Georgia’s Republican leaders refuse to stand up to him, even as he puts Georgia jobs, Georgia businesses, and one of our most important industries at risk. They would rather stay in Donald Trump’s good graces than fight for the people they were elected to represent. As governor, I will fight back when Donald Trump threatens Georgia’s economy or the livelihoods of our people, and I will do everything in my power to stop him.”
