Bottoms Statement on Governor Kemp Calling Special Session to Redraw Voting Maps
Bottoms: ‘Georgia Republicans are Once Again Taking Orders from Trump with Another Attack on Voting Rights’
ATLANTA — Today, Keisha Lance Bottoms released the following statement after Governor Kemp called for a special session to redraw Georgia’s voting maps after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais which makes it harder to challenge racially discriminatory voting maps.
The ruling held that plaintiffs can prove that a state violated Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act only if there is strong evidence of intentional racial discrimination.
Last week, when asked about redrawing maps, Brian Kemp said that the ruling “requires” new maps in Georgia.
“Georgia Republicans are once again taking orders from Trump with another attack on voting rights. This special session is a blatant attempt to dilute Black voting power in Georgia and turn back the clock on decades of progress,” said Bottoms.
“As a fifth-generation Georgian, I know the sacrifices made to secure and protect our right to vote. As Governor, I will veto any map designed to suppress fair representation.”
